HIGH-HEEL DASH

Elin Bjerre of Kristianstad, Sweden, broke the tape in the 100-meter final of the Stockholm Stiletto Run, a race sponsored by Glamour magazine, on June 13. Contestants had to wear heels at least 2¾" high. Bjerre avoided breaking her heels on the rain-slicked pavement by sprinting on her toes, but she strained so hard at the finish that she nearly fell. She won a shopping spree worth $15,000. Contestant Number 428 was not so lucky.

"I WENT EARLY AND SHOT SOME QUALIFYING HEATS. IT WAS RAINING AND SLIPPERY. BASED ON WHAT I SAW IN THE HEATS, I STOOD BEHIND THE FINISH LINE AND HOPED IT WOULD BE A TIGHT RACE. IT SURE WAS."
