Ominous skies over Citi Field at sunset seemed to spell doom for the Mets in their interleague game against the visiting Yankees on June 26. A mammatus cloud formation hung over the stadium in the second inning as Melky Cabrera batted against Mets starter Mike Pelfrey with the bases loaded. Cabrera grounded out, failing to drive in a run, but the Yankees won the game 9-1. Mammatus formations ("breast clouds") can precede big storms, but these arrived in Queens after a light rain.
"THE ONLY REASON I STOPPED TO MAKE A PICTURE LIKE THIS WAS THE SKY. IT WAS RED, WITH A DRAMATIC CLOUD PATTERN THAT MADE IT APPEAR TO BE ON FIRE. I HURRIED TO SHOOT A FEW FRAMES BEFORE THE SKY CHANGED."
