GENIUS AND CHAOS WERE NEVER FAR APART DURING DIEGO MARADONA'S PLAYING DAYS. THE MORE UNRULY HIS LIFE BECAME, THE MORE HIS BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES RESTORED order. On the pitch, at least, Maradona spoke the most lucid language. As a manager, however, he has been speaking gobbledygook. This is especially apparent in his tactics and team selection.
Maradona's erratic decisionmaking during qualifying led many experts to doubt the Albiceleste. But with its abundant talent and experience, this team should coast through the group stage. And while tactics and lineup selection are crucial in a league format, once you get to the knockout stages of the World Cup, raw emotion can make all the difference, especially when mad skills are a given. And there is nobody in the world who can generate as much passion as Maradona. This is the kind of team that will either implode spectacularly or go all the way to the final. I'm leaning toward the latter.
