Wittels, a sophomore infielder at Florida International, extended his hitting streak to 54 games through Sunday, the second-longest in Division I history. (Robin Ventura of Oklahoma State set the record, 58, in 1987.) Wittels, who led the Panthers in hits (96) and RBIs (58) at week's end, won the Sun Belt batting title (.415) and was named conference player of the year.

Gemmell, a freshman at Harvard, was named Ivy League freshman and player of the year after going 16--0 and winning the individual title in the top division at the College Squash Association championships. The 19-year-old All-America was one of five players selected to represent Canada at July's World University Championships in Melbourne.
