SI: What are your thoughts on the Pac-10's expansion?
DE: I like it. I would like us to be able to get into two divisions. And if it can help the Pac-10 financially and TV-wise, then it's a very good thing.
SI: Why is making that extra revenue so important?
DE: Well, we're the only league that doesn't fully share revenue. What it comes down to is: How do you keep all of these schools afloat financially in all sports? We have to have good women's athletic programs. We have to have good men's athletic programs. And it is all driven by football.
SI: HOW MUCH LONGER DO YOU WANT TO COACH?
DE: FIVE OR SIX YEARS. I WANT TO GET IT TO THE POINT WHERE WE CAN COMPETE IN THIS LEAGUE EVERY SEASON.
SI: Do you feel the team is on that track to compete?
DE: Regardless of what fans may think, I see this thing building over time, and it's starting to get there. I'd be upset with four wins [in 2009] too; I don't blame the fans. But after three years, from when I came here, we have things in place a lot better than what we had before.
SI: Still, the expectations for the team this year are pretty low....
DE: With the public but not with us.... What I've seen is that there is not that much separation between the 10 teams in the league. Everybody beats everybody. Who knows what will happen this year?
