In year two of his renovation project, coach Danny Hope's goals are for the Boilermakers to cut down on mistakes, develop talent and go to a bowl
KEY RETURNEES
RB RALPH BOLDEN SOPHOMORE
A torn ACL in spring football put Bolden's season in jeopardy. Should he make a speedy recovery, the Boilermakers will have one of the conference's top rushers (935 yards and nine TDs).
WR KEITH SMITH SENIOR
Purdue's top receiver was a Biletnikoff nominee and the conference leader (91 catches for 1,100 yards) last season. Robert Marve will be happy the former QB and safety has found his niche.
LB JASON WERNER SENIOR
After being granted a sixth year of eligibility for missing all of 2006 and '08 with back injuries, Werner (who had 77 tackles and 4½ sacks in '09) will be called on to bring leadership and cohesion to a defense that lost five starters.
DE GERALD GOODEN JUNIOR
Ryan Kerrigan should receive the brunt of the attention from opposing blockers, freeing up Gooden, who had 4½ sacks in '09, to wreak havoc on the other side. Hope believes that Gooden and Kerrigan are the strongest defensive duo Purdue has had in more than a decade.
