In 1935 THE DOWNTOWN ATHLETIC CLUB in New York City began awarding a trophy (later renamed the Heisman) to the most outstanding player of the college football season. Often the winners had raised the level of play or in some way changed the game with their athletic genius. There have been far too many of these Heisman originals over the past 75 years to include them all on these pages, but here is a baker's dozen of the most memorable.
NO other primarily defensive player has won the Heisman. Woodson had eight picks as a junior while also returning punts and playing some as a receiver.
THE Downtown Athletic Club's first winner (as the most outstanding player "East of the Mississippi"), he earned what was then called the DAC Trophy.
