Road racer Janet Guthrie wore these soft-soled shoes while competing in sports car races and during her first year in NASCAR.

1930s

AN ORIGINAL BEACH BOY

Tony Elmore, who drove in the first stock car race at Daytona Beach, wore this aluminum helmet in the late '30s.

1950s

PETTY PROTECTOR

Lee Petty wore this helmet while putting his mark on the sport in the middle of the decade. His first title came in '54, when he won seven races, and he also took championships in '58 and '59.

1952

SOUND OF THE FURY

Bill France equipped NASCAR officials with Army-surplus two-way radios to help with communication along the two-mile Daytona Beach course.
