THE LEGACY

Gentleman Ned retired from racing in 1966, at age 34, and became a well-respected NASCAR broadcaster. He memorably interviewed President Reagan in '84 and called his son Dale's win in the '93 Daytona 500.

• Became NASCAR's first three-time series champion, winning in 1954, '58 and '59

• Declared the winner of the inaugural Daytona 500 three days after it had ended, when officials had reviewed the photo finish

• Officially retired from driving in 1964 with 54 wins, the sport's top mark until his son Richard surpassed it in '67
