You would swear you were on some remote tropical island. There is the view of the Pacific—available by simply stepping out onto your balcony—the white, sandy beaches and high sloping cliffs that double as the idyllic (perfect, really) vantage point to take in one breathtaking sunset after another. But you are, in fact, in California, little more than an hour's drive from downtown Los Angeles. And that is still a very good thing.
Tucked in the corner of a mile-long spit of sand, Montage Laguna Beach offers more than just great views. For the more active traveler there is snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, beach volleyball and golf. (Wondering what to do with the kids while you're out? They can spend the day in Paintbox, where they'll take part in games and create arts and crafts.)
Of course, it can get a little cool in Southern California during the winter. But the Montage is a resort for all seasons. The elegant mosaic-tiled infinity pool is heated, as is the nearby lap pool.
The crown jewel of the resort is Spa Montage, a 20,000-square-foot facility that is the ultimate fix for relaxation junkies. Therapists will design a treatment to fit individual needs, and the spa's oceanside location factors prominently: Treatments include water therapy, and seaweed and clay wraps. Don't just leave when you're done. Both men's and women's locker rooms are equipped with waterfall whirlpools treated with thermal mineral salts imported from Hungary.
Yes, Hungarian bath salts. An ironic—but splendid— finishing touch to this American beauty.
