In an explosion from a suicide bombing while he was returning from a training session, Abdi Salaan Mohamed Ali, one of Somalia's up-and-coming soccer stars. A recent addition to the national under-20 squad, Ali was walking home with teammates after an early Monday practice at a Somali police academy when, according to a bystander, there were two explosions. (Somali players Mahmoud Amin Mohamed and Siid Ali Mohamed Xiis were also wounded in the attack.) Afterward, FIFA president Sepp Blatter offered his condolences in a statement to friends and family. Over the past four years Somalia has lost more than a dozen soccer players and officials to violence during its ongoing civil war.
