Sam, a senior center at Landon School, led the Bears to their first undefeated season and state title with two goals and two assists in an 8--2 win over DeMatha High. (His first goal came just eight seconds into the game.) Sam more than doubled the school record for goals in a season, with 49, including hat tricks in four straight games, and was named state player of the year.
CHESAPEAKE, VA. > Basketball
Schweers, a senior guard at Christopher Newport, led the Captains to their first Final Four berth while averaging a D-III tournament best 33 points per game. Through Sunday she leads the nation in scoring (25.9 ppg). This month she also became the school's alltime scoring leader (men's and women's) and the second NCAA woman to surpass 400 career three-pointers.
ST. JOHNS, ARIZ. > Wrestling
Ryder, a junior at St. Johns High, won his third straight state championship with a pin in the first period of the Division IV 112-pound finals. He started each of those title-winning seasons with a major injury sustained as a wide receiver during football season: a broken foot his freshman year, a torn ligament in his wrist last year and a broken leg this year.
