SI:
What do you need to see from Stephen Garcia if he returns?
SS: We're hoping he'll mature and become a solid student-athlete here, dress appropriately, try to learn everything he can about our offense—which he's never made a commitment to do. He's got potential, and I believe he can play a lot smarter than he has played in the past.
SI:
How much do you expect Jadeveon Clowney to contribute as a freshman?
SS: We think he'll be in there a lot. Who knows if he'll be a starter, but we certainly think he can be a third-down pass rusher in the first game. We'll give him a chance to play. We'll try to let him come from a lot of different positions ... and hopefully give us that fierce pass rush we've not always had.
SI: HOW CAN THAT PASS RUSH MOST BENEFIT YOUR DEFENSE?
SS: WE [SHOULD] BE A LOT BETTER ON THIRD DOWN. IT'S NOT GOOD WHEN THE OTHER TEAM MAKES 40 PERCENT OF ITS THIRD DOWNS. SOME GAMES IT WAS A STRUGGLE THERE.
SI:
What separates your program from an SEC championship?
SS: Last season we were seventh in offense and seventh in defense [in the SEC]. Some years we're third or fourth in defense, eighth or ninth in offense. So we haven't quite put the team together yet. Our goal will be to win the SEC and go from there.
