SI: Entering the third year of your second stint, what's the state of the program?
BS: We're still a work in progress. We're further along than we were last year. But we have a variety of the intrinsic things that aren't in place: extremely high-quality leadership, the consistency of our daily routine.
SI: ARE YOU COUNTING ON COLLIN KLEIN TO EMERGE AT QB?
BS: YES. IT WILL REMAIN COMPETITIVE, BUT SOMEONE'S GOT TO TAKE THE FIRST SNAPS. HE'S A FINE ATHLETE. STANDING ON THE SIDELINE [WOULDN'T BE] OF VALUE TO HIM OR OUR TEAM.
SI: What does the Big 12's realignment mean for Kansas State?
BS: It makes things more difficult. I was always a big fan of divisional play. Speaking only for Kansas State, we liked that setup. And I thought the championship game was a great asset for the conference. You see most conferences are going to that; they recognize the value.
SI: Do you still hear about, or have thoughts on, the excessive-celebration penalty that may have cost you the Pinstripe Bowl?
BS: Well, it's not [an official's] role to comment on how poor a coach I am, so I'm not going to comment about the officiating. Every once in a while we hear about it from alumni or fans, but I don't hear our players refer to it. We've moved beyond it.
