What does your contract extension say about the future of the program?
PF: It shows a strong and bold commitment from both me and the university. The university is committed to winning championships. You think about the academics and the world-class institution. Now we have to get our football program at that level.
Your team played at Wrigley Field last season. If you could play in any stadium, which would it be?
PF: The Rose Bowl. As a Chicagoan, as a kid who grew up dreaming of playing Big Ten football, I will always have a special place in my heart for Pasadena. I had the opportunity to go [as a Northwestern linebacker in 1995], but I wasn't able to play. I haven't stepped foot in that city since. It's one of my things: I won't eat at In-N-Out Burger, and I won't go back to Pasadena until the Cats go again.
SI: YOU SANG TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME AT A CUBS GAME FOR THE SEVENTH TIME. HAS YOUR SINGING GOTTEN ANY BETTER?
PF: HECK NO, MAN! BUT IT'S FUN. I GOT IT DONE.
What's one thing your team razzes you about?
PF: I use one phrase to my players when they're going out, that they need to have "good, clean American fun," and they should understand what that means. So I'll get text messages saying, "I'm having good, clean American fun, Coach!" I just got five texts from the guys saying it.
