Nia, a freshman at Bishop Alemany High, won gold in the youth girls' (ages 13--14) shot put at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics in Wichita, Kans., and at the AAU National Junior Olympics in New Orleans a week later, where she broke the AAU national record for her age group. Nia put the shot 50'5" in the preliminary round, and then reset the mark with a 51'6ΒΌ" effort in the finals.

ETHAN WESTPHAL

LENOX, IOWA > BASEBALL

Ethan, a recent graduate of Martensdale--St. Mary's High, pitched four shutout innings in relief, allowing just one hit before ending the game with a strikeout, as the Blue Devils defeated Kee High for the Class 1A state title, capping an undefeated season and extending their winning streak to 87, a national record. Ethan had a 0.89 ERA in 16 appearances and was named 1A all-state team captain.

ALLY MCDONALD

FULTON, MISS. > GOLF

Ally, a recent graduate of Itawamba Agricultural High, won the Trusted Choice Big "I" National Championship girls' title by nine strokes with a four-under-par 284 at Reunion Golf Club in Madison, Miss. In June she won the state women's amateur crown and in May became the first girl to earn a Mississippi state title while competing in the boys' division. She will play at Mississippi State in the fall.
