THE FANS ARE ON TOP OF YOU. YOU HEAR THE GOOD AND YOU HEAR the bad. My last year, when I was in a contract dispute, it was tough, but all in all Red Sox Nation was great to me. I got into bar fights and different things, and they still supported me. I loved being in the clubhouse. I was there early. I stayed late. It's like your home. I had an end locker, and I was next to the music. An old stereo system. When I wanted certain music on, that's what we listened to. Because the locker room was small, you couldn't run from the press. You sat in front of your locker, you answered the questions. That was part of Boston baseball.

WHAT I REMEMBER IS THE BIG-ASS RAT THAT I ALWAYS SEE RUNNING around right there [in a corner of the clubhouse]! I seriously do. It's the size of a f------ cat! No, Fenway Park, man, it's just a place where you definitely want to play baseball, where you want to perform. This is it, right here.

MY ROOKIE YEAR I WAS WITH the Orioles. The thing that stuck out to me was that song in the eighth inning, Sweet Caroline. Everybody was singing along to every word. It's like everybody knows the drill. I was thinking, Man, maybe every stadium's got something like this. They don't.
