Katie, a freshman at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart who swims for the Curl-Burke Swim Club, broke national records for 13- to 14-year-old girls in the 500- (4:35.14) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:29.81) at the National Age Group Team Challenge. In her first varsity meet two days later, she won the 200-yard free in an automatic high school All-America time of 1:49.67 to set a pool and team record. Katie has qualified for the 2012 Olympic trials in the 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-meter free.
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. > FOOTBALL
D.J., a 6-foot, 185-pound senior running back at Saguaro High, is second in the nation in touchdowns this season (57 through Sunday) and holds the Arizona career touchdown record (97). He scored twice in a 56--28 win over Queen Creek to break the state single-season scoring mark (previously 51 TDs). A week earlier he scored an 11-man state record 10 TDs and ran for a record 508 yards on 20 carries to lead the defending state champion Sabercats to an 81--48 win over Sunrise Mountain High.
LOVELAND, COLO. > GYMNASTICS
Claire, a sophomore at Loveland High, swept all four events on the first day of the Class 5A championships to win the all-around title with a state-record 39.225 total points. The next day, she won every individual title, scoring 9.75 in vault and bars and 9.9 in floor exercise and balance beam, breaking the beam record (9.85). A junior international elite gymnast, she won the all-around title at the Level 10 Colorado state championships last year to qualify a second time for the Junior Olympics.
