Hours after the traditional team drop-by last Monday, Thomas, the only American on the 2011 Stanley Cup champions, issued a statement on his Facebook page explaining that he believes the federal government has grown "out of control" but that he felt both political parties were to blame and that "this was not about politics or party... . This was a choice I had to make as an individual." Although teammates learned of Thomas's decision only on the morning of the visit, G.M. Peter Chiarelli said that he had multiple conversations with the Conn Smythe Trophy winner on the subject in the preceding months. "[That] is not reflective of our organization's views and beliefs," Chiarelli said of Thomas's post. "But everyone is entitled to voice their opinion."
