TECH TALK

HOT STICK

Hunter Mahan attributed his Match Play win to his new Ping Nome, which is more than simply a putter

NOT ALL putting strokes are the same, which is why not all putters are either. Someone who swings from the inside will need a different stick than someone who takes it straight back and through. With its Nome putter line, Ping attempts to match putter with puttee. The Nome comes with three shaft bends, each suited for a different stroke shape. Golfers can download the iPing app (free) and attach their phone to the putter ($30 for a cradle), and the app will analyze their stroke. Mahan did it last week, and the change helped him blow away the field.

A "face balanced" bend works for a straight back-and-through stroke.

The "mid hang" bend fits a stroke with a slight arc.

The "toe down" bend matches up with a pronounced arc.
