At age 81 of prostate cancer, former NCAA and NBA coach Dick Harter. A former Penn reserve guard, Harter coached Rider, Penn, Oregon and Penn State, going 295--196 and winning two Ivy League championships over 18 years. With the Ducks, where his teams were known as the Kamikaze Kids for their swarming defense, he ended UCLA's 98-game home winning streak, in '76. Leaving the college game in '83, he assisted under NBA greats Chuck Daly, Pat Riley and Larry Bird; his defensive acumen earned him the expansion Hornets' first coaching gig, in '88--89. Harter retired in 2010.
