Bernheim, a junior and a corporal in the Corps of Cadets at Norwich University, scored three times in a 34--15 win over Army to break the program record with 65 career tries. Last year she led Norwich to the USA Rugby Sevens championship (34--5 over Boston College) and was named MVP. She also helped the Cadets win the 15s Division II title. A member of the under-20 national team, Bernheim was named an All-America last season. She had 72 career tries through Sunday.

Cunningham, a freshman quarterback at Howard, came off the bench in the third quarter to lead the Bison to a season-opening 30--29 win over Morehouse in the Nation's Football Classic at RFK Stadium. In a game with eight lead changes, he helmed two key fourth-quarter drives: a 15-play, 89-yard march to give Howard a 24--23 lead with 2:17 left, and an eight-play, 49-yarder, culminating in a decisive 13-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds to go. Cunningham was named the game's MVP.

SEATTLE > SPRINT KAYAKING
Lani, a senior at the Northwest School, swept all four sprint kayak singles events in the women's junior 18-and-under division at nationals, held at Seattle's Green Lake. She won gold medals in the 200- (47.32), 500- (2:09.58), 1,000- (4:23.96) and 5,000-meter (26:54.88) races. Lani, a member of the host Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club, also earned gold with teammate Claire Kim in the two-person kayak 200-meter race (43.92) and helped the club's juniors to a second-place finish.
