The controversial ending to ND's Oct. 13 win over Stanford—replays indicated that Cardinal running back Stepfan Taylor was not down before he crossed the goal line in OT—cost the Cardinal a playoff spot. Stanford and Oregon could both be 11--1, with the Ducks' loss coming to Stanford. But should the committee take a questionable call into account? "While we appreciate what should have been called, the fact is, it was not reversed," said Smith. "I don't think we can quantify that."
Debate #3: K-State Conundrum
Kansas State (10--1) is sixth in the BCS standings and would seemingly have an argument for the top four. But the Wildcats failed to crack the committee's top 8, with two-loss teams LSU and Texas A&M garnering more support. Losing 52--24 to a then 4--5 Baylor team proved fatal. "Their one loss is a nasty loss, that's why I left them out," said Bill Moos. Smith did not even need that result to justify his decision. "I just think Texas A&M and Oregon would beat 'em," he said.
