NO. 2 OHIO STATE 31 NO. 1 MIAMI 24 JANUARY 3, 2003 FIESTA BOWL
THE HURRICANES had won 34 straight, but the Buckeyes led the entire second half until Miami's 40-yard field goal with three seconds left sent a national-title game into OT for the first time. Both teams scored touchdowns (a questionable pass-interference call extended Ohio State's drive); then running back Maurice Clarett gave OSU a 31--24 lead. The Hurricanes converted on fourth-and-three to keep their drive alive, but later, on fourth-and-goal from the one, quarterback Ken Dorsey's pass fell incomplete.
NO. 1 AUBURN 22 NO. 2 OREGON 19 JANUARY 10, 2011 BCS CHAMPIONSHIP
THE TIGERS AND THE DUCKS had each averaged more than 42 points during the season, though the two teams would combine to score only four touchdowns during the title game. Auburn held a 19--11 lead in the fourth quarter when Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews punched the ball out of quarterback Cam Newton's arm to give the Ducks possession at the Tigers' 40-yard line. With 2:36 left, running back LaMichael James scored on a shovel pass from QB Darron Thomas, and Oregon added the two-point conversion. From their own 25, the Tigers mounted one last drive—highlighted by Michael Dyer's wild 37-yard run—and Wes Byrum kicked a 19-yard field goal as time expired.
