Look up Lee Janzen, Curtis Strange, Jim Furyk and any number of other players who made big changes. There aren't many seamless transitions. Some people think Tiger hasn't been the same since he went to a 45¼-inch graphite-shafted driver.
Rory made a really big move. He had equipment that he knew worked. Rory is chasing money now, and the golfer, at his core, should be chasing titles, not money. I hope for his sake that this very subtle difference doesn't invade his vision of himself.
After a career-best year, I wouldn't switch all my stuff. You couldn't pay me enough. This is a huge gamble. The first six weeks of the year will be big for Rory to see how comfortable he's going to be.
I see equipment as an issue, but he's at a stage of life where he's changing everything. He's courting a celebrity tennis player, moving into a Florida mansion, negotiating endorsement deals. His life is anything but settled. I'm in Rory's camp all the way. He's a superstar, but there's a danger. He showed last year he can go off the boil for a while. This season he might be at a higher risk for that.
Rory is entrenched as the world's No. 1 player. Can anyone challenge him?
