Chase, a recent graduate of Shawnee Mission East High, won both the Kansas and the Missouri junior amateur championships. He shot a six-under 210 to win the Kansas Junior at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield by the largest margin of victory (eight strokes) in the tournament's 54-year history. He shot a seven-under 137 to win the Missouri event, at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex in Smithville, by four strokes. Chase will play for Kansas this fall.
CHARLOTTE > SOCCER
Jane, a striker and recent graduate of Charlotte Catholic High, scored 75 goals, the third-most in North Carolina history, to lead the nation this season. She also had 17 assists. Jane was named MVP of the state-title-winning squad as a sophomore and last season led the Cougars to the Class 3A championship game. The Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Observer player of the year, she is a three-time all-state selection. Jane will attend Appalachian State.
MCCORDSVILLE, IND. > WATERSKIING
Smith, 22, won his second straight Malibu Open men's slalom title, on Veterans Park Lagoon in Milwaukee, tying the world record by clearing two buoys with 43 feet off the rope. (It was shortened to 32 feet from 75.) He defeated the U.K.'s Will Asher, the world's top-ranked slalom skier, in the final. Smith ran the complete pass (six buoys) at 41 feet off the rope in three of the four previous rounds. He also tied the record in June at the Little Mountain Spring Pro Am 2 in Maiden, N.C.
