Last week, we dwelled on the negative and picked out the duds. This week, we celebrate the season that was by honoring the top fantasy stars at each position, plus a nominee for top fantasy bargain.
AL: DAVID ORTIZ, RED SOX: He proved last year's numbers weren't a fluke, setting career-highs in all the major categories. This year, the numbers really put him in the MVP race. FINAL LINE: .301 BA, 41 homers, 139 RBIs, 94 runs scores, 0 steals, .983 OPS
Top bargain: Travis Hafner, Indians
NL: ALBERT PUJOLS, CARDINALS: Another year, another set of huge stats for Pujols, including a career-high in homers (46). Not like it matters much, but he's only eligible at first next season. FINAL LINE: .331 BA, 46 homers, 123 RBIs, 133 runs scored, 5 steals, 1.037 OPS
Top bargain: Brad Wilkerson, Expos
AL: MICHAEL YOUNG, RANGERS: He won't be eligible here next year after moving to short for Alfonso Soriano. However, he had a breakout season and edged out his teammate thanks to some big average and runs scored numbers. In all, though, it was a rather weak field at this position. FINAL LINE: .313 BA, 22 homers, 99 RBIs, 114 runs, 13 steals, .836 OPS
Top bargain: Juan Uribe, White Sox
NL: JEFF KENT, ASTROS: By now, you should know what to expect from Kent -- good power and run production from the position, plus a decent average. The power gives him a slight edge over Mark Loretta, who had to be the best bargain here this season. FINAL LINE: .289 BA, 27 homers, 107 RBIs, 96 runs, 7 steals, .879 OPS
Top bargain: Loretta, Padres
AL: MIGUEL TEJADA, ORIOLES: With Alex Rodriguez moving to third, it makes it that much easier to honor Tejada, who made a big splash by signing with Baltimore in free agency but then flew under the radar for the most part in leading the majors with 150 RBIs. He earned his share of the money, that's for sure. FINAL LINE: .311 BA, 34 homers, 150 RBIs, 107 runs, 4 steals, .894 OPS
