It's Week 2 of the baseball season. Baseball is back in full swing. How do they start off the year? I'll tell you. Dmitri Young mashes three taters on Opening Day, Dewon Brazelton actually pitches well, and the Mets start 0-5 before Pedro Martinez's win on Sunday. Before you get too excited, don't expect the 400-plus RBIs that Hideki Matsui is projected to hit this season.
Here are this week's pitchers with two starts for this week. The rubric is the same as last week, but in case you forgot:
START: Strong start Start: Decent start Bench: Decent bench BENCH: Strong bench
On to the matchups. This week we will be incorporating batter vs. pitcher matchups. This is so that you, my faithful readers, can determine whether or not to bench your stud hitter against a scrub pitcher against whom he has gone 0 for his career.
Week of April 11th-17th *denotes double-header **denotes domed/roofed stadium
? ARI** - 3x COL, 3x @WAS: The D'backs only face one tough starter this week ( Livan Hernandez) and for the rest of the week get to feast upon mediocre pitching. They get to host Colorado pitching, which means more chances to drive in runs for your Diamondbacks. Start Glaus, Green, and Gonzo in all leagues, and in deeper leagues feel free to go with Clayton, Cruz and Cintron if need be. For pitchers, start Webb and Vazquez
Key Matchup: RF Shawn Green vs. SP Livan Hernandez: In his career, Green has batted .347, with 3 HR, 6 RBI, and an 8/7 BB/K ratio. When Livan starts against 'Zona, be sure to start Green.
? ATL - 3x WAS, 3x @PHI: Is there a better way to start off the second week of the season than facing Zach Day, Esteban Loaiza, and Tomo Ohka, then going against Gavin Floyd, Jon Lieber and Brett Myers? I can't think of one. Start Furcal, Giles, the Joneses, Estrada in all leagues. For deeper leagues, start LaRoche, Mondesi, and Jordan. Start Smoltz, Hudson, and Thomson if necessary.
Key Matchup: 1B/ OF Brad Wilkerson vs. SP Mike Hampton: Wilks is only 1-for-13 against Hampton in his career. Just something to keep in mind when the underrated Wilkerson faces Hampton in the first game of the series.
? DET - 3x @MIN**, 3x @KC: As previously mentioned, Dmitri Young got off to a hot start this season, and he will look to keep it going against some mediocre pitching this week, as will the rest of the Tigers. Start Young, Guillen, I-Rod, and Maggs in all leagues, and White and Monroe in deeper leagues. Start Bonderman as well.
