Recruiting players on the Pennsylvania scene
November 13, 2006
It's tempting to go with North Carolina. The Tar Heels, after all, secured the services of the nation's No. 1-ranked shooting guard, Wayne Ellington, in their Class of 2006. Early reports from UNC camp suggest he could eventually be the best player of their heralded freshman class. The real champ, though, is Virginia, which in 2004 signed Sean Singletary out of Philadelphia -- and has since watched him flourish into the ACC's top point guard. For their Class of 2007, the Cavaliers landed four-star shooting guard Jeff Jones, who's expected to inherit J.R. Reynolds' scoring duties in the backcourt.

Duke and Carolina invaded Merion, Pa.'s Episcopal Academy in 2005 to take the state's two highest-rated preps during this stretch, Ellington and Gerald Henderson, a 6-foot-5 small forward. Meanwhile, Maryland, Oklahoma and others are battling Pittsburgh for five-star 2007 power forward Herb Pope, who was once committed to the Panthers

Pittsburgh traditionally did most of its recruiting in New York, building Big East contenders with players like Chris Taft, Carl Krauser, Levance Fields, and Ronald Ramon. Now that the Panthers no longer have ace NYC recruiter Barry Rohrssen, they're moving back into the local market, getting DeJuan Blair in 2007 and staying in the Hunt for Pope. Penn State, meanwhile, has seven state players on its roster, just none of the ones on this list.
