Davies says U.S. aiming to win World Cup

The U.S. stands on the brink of World Cup qualification, and Sochaux forward Charlie Davies believes his international side can not only book its place in South Africa next summer, but claim the jackpot as well.

A successful 2009 Confederations Cup can be built upon, according to the former Hammarby star, who has featured regularly in the national setup since making his debut in 2007, scoring four goals in the process.

"By beating Spain in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup and by narrowly losing to Brazil in the final, we showed that we can do something global," he enthused to French daily L'Equipe. "With the players we have, if things go well, we can win the World Cup."

With only two matches of its qualifying campaign remaining, the U.S. can book its place in the finals in South Africa by claiming a victory against Honduras on Saturday. However, its hosts will prove awkward customers, as they have claimed four wins from four matches in the final stage of qualifying.

Davies, who has four international goals to his name, will hope to earn some pitch time after some mixed performances with les Lionceaux in Ligue 1 in recent weeks.
