Michigan entered the season with national-title aspirations, but the Mountaineers quickly put an end to that with a stunning upset. Appalachian State stormed the Big House and became the first FCS (formerly known as Division I-AA) team ever to beat a ranked FBS (formerly Division I) team. The Mountaineers blocked a 37-yard field goal on the last play of the game to preserve the victory.
