Johnson was born in Walnut Creek, Calif., and grew up idolizing A's left-hander Vida Blue. Despite being offered a $50,000 signing bonus by the Braves, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 1982 Amateur Draft, Johnson opted to attend college at USC.
