Upsets at the U.S. OpenNo. 6 Juan Martin del Potro defeats No. 1 Roger Federer
 Playing in his first Grand Slam final, the 20-year-old Argentine rallied to beat the five-time defending champion 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. In snapping Federer's 40-match winning streak at the tournament and denying him a third major this year, del Potro joined Guillermo Vilas (1977) as the only South Americans to win the Open.
