Wake-Up Call: May 18, 2001

Updated: Friday May 18, 2001 12:49 AM

The Wake-Up Call appears Monday-Friday
in the Daily Quick Hits box.

Here are some of the stories CNNSI.com will track today:

Ichiro Suzuki is batting .385 during his 22-game hitting streak. AP
  •    Vince Carter has led the Toronto Raptors on an amazing ride in the NBA playoffs. But tonight it could all come to an end. Carter's Raptors face elimination in Game 6 against red-hot Allen Iverson and the top-seeded Sixers in Toronto's Air Canada Center (8 EDT, TNT). NBA Playoffs Coverage
  •    A double-overtime victory in Game 3 gave the St. Louis Blues new life in the Western Conference finals against the Colorado Avalanche. The Blues aim to even the series with the Avs in Game 4 (7 EDT, ESPN). Quest for the Cup Coverage
  • All streaks must come to an end. The Cardinals and Mariners phenom Ichiro Suzuki look to extend theirs tonight. St. Louis has won 10 in a row heading into its game with NL East-leading Philadelphia at 7:05 EDT, while Ichiro aims to hit safely in his 23rd consecutive game against the Yankees at 10:05 EDT. Today's Pitching Probables
  •    Michael Campbell took the spotlight from Tiger Woods on Thursday, shooting a 10-under 62 in the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open in Germany. Woods, who reportedly received $2 million to play in the event, is seven strokes back. Follow all the action with our up-to-the-minute leaderboard.
    FEATURED COLUMN   THE SCOOP
As we close in on the quarter point of the season, CNNSI.com's John Donovan says baseball's free-agent class of 2001 -- led by A-Rod -- is easily earning its money.   The Eagles remain optimistic about Duce Staley's recovery from a foot injury, but SI's Peter King says Philadelphia will pursue another running back as insurance.
MEN OF THE HOUR   MAN ON THE SPOT
Milwaukee's "Big Three" came up huge when it mattered the most. Sam Cassell, Glenn Robinson and Allen combined for 85 points as the Bucks beat the Hornets 104-97 to force Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.   Al Leiter hasn't pitched since April 20. Boy, have the Mets missed him. New York is in a free fall, sitting in last place in the NL East at 15-25. The defending NL champions hope Leiter's return tonight against the Dodgers brings a spark.
    STATITUDES OF THE DAY
26   Years since the last time the Pittsburgh Penguins were shut out at home in the postseason. New Jersey blanked Pittsburgh 3-0 in Game 3, the Penguins' first shutout loss since April, 1975. Enjoy Statitudes.
    DON'T MISS
      vs.
Mark Grace had the most hits of any player in the 1990s. Today, he returns to the place he got a majority of those hits -- in a different uniform. Now a Diamondback, Grace returns to Wrigley Field for the first time at 3:20 EDT (WGN) as Arizona faces the Cubs.
    THEY SAID IT
"I almost didn't want to go out on the field because I was almost in tears, and I didn't want to appear like a little girl." -- Dodgers pitcher and Montreal native Eric Gagne on receiving three standing ovations from Expos fans. Gagne became the second pitcher from the province of Quebec to start at Olympic Stadium.
