MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO, Italy (AP) -- Norway's Finn-Christian Jagge
won a World Cup slalom Monday night, beating Austrians Benjamin
Raich and Thomas Stangassinger.
Jagge, 33, an Olympic slalom champion in his final season of
World Cup competition, mastered the steep Miramonti course with a
two-run time of 1 minute, 38.67 seconds.
"I was given shorter skis one week ago and I immediately
improved my times in slalom training," Jagge said. "The new skis
helped me a lot in the race.
"No doubt I'm going to use the shorter skis also in the next
slalom races. I'm winning and enjoying skiing again."
Jagge edged Raich by 0.23 seconds, and Stangassinger by 0.57.
Jagge, a seven-time winner on the World Cup circuit, also won a
1992 slalom at Madonna di Campiglio.
Raich, a rising star with four World Cup victories last season,
improved one place from the first run at expense of Stangassinger,
his elder teammate.
Norway's Tom Stiansen finished fourth, followed by Slovenia's
Jure Kosir and Matjaz Vrhovnik.
American Bode Miller crashed in the first run, shortly after
clocking one of the fastest intermediate times. Sacha Gros, the
only American to complete the race, placed 16th, two seconds behind
the winner.
World Cup overall leader Hermann Maier does not compete in the
slalom. He has won five of his six races this season - two giant
slaloms, a downhill and two super-Gs.
The men's circuit continues with downhills in Val Gardena on
Friday and Saturday and a giant slalom in Alta Badia on Sunday.
Friday's downhill makes up for the race canceled in Val D'Isere
last Saturday.
