STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Reuters) -- Top Alpine skier Pernilla Wiberg said she may have to quit following major knee surgery in the United States.

"It's doubtful that I will be able to continue competing," Swedish daily Expressen quoted the multiple world championship and Olympic medal winner as saying after the operation. "I don't want to risk future injuries."

"I have to start thinking about what will happen after this career."

Wiberg, 29, underwent a knee operation at a specialist clinic in Vail, Colorado, on Wednesday.

This operation was similar to the one she had two years ago but this time the knee was much worse, her manager Keith Karlsson said.

Wiberg, the 1997 overall World Cup champion, claimed her 24th World Cup victory a month ago when she won a downhill in St. Moritz.

Her injury-plagued career has resulted in several operations since 1989 and last weekend she decided to visit the Vail clinic because of a swelling in her left knee.

That visit led to yet another operation, which could end the career of one of the sport's most popular figures.
