Austrian appeal Federation to contest Maier's race ban
OBERHOFEN, Switzerland (AP) -- The Austrian Ski Federation on Monday appealed Hermann Maier's disqualification and suspension from the next World Cup giant slalom. Maier, the reigning World Cup overall and giant slalom champion, was favored to win Sunday's giant slalom in the French resort but was disqualified before the first leg for breaking the time limit on his morning inspection run. FIS later barred Maier from racing in the next World Cup giant slalom and fined him 25,000 Swiss francs (US$14,900) after he took an unauthorized run on Sunday's course 10 minutes before the race started. International Ski Federation spokeswoman Sonja Reichen-Platzer confirmed that the Austrians had filed an appeal against the world governing body's ruling in Val d'Isere, France. The case now goes to the chairman of the FIS rules committee, Christian Poley, who will set up a three-person appeals commission. FIS did not say when a ruling on the appeal is expected.
