Hall of Fame lineup Connecticut players reunited at Hartford Civic CenterPosted: Wednesday September 29, 1999 07:52 PM
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Former Connecticut teammates Jennifer Rizzotti, Kara Wolters, Rita Williams and Nykesha Sales return to familiar and friendly territory this weekend when the WNBA players take on the U.S. Women's Senior National team at the Hartford Civic Center. Rizzotti and Wolters finished the recent WNBA season as members of the three-time champion Houston Comets. Williams suited up for the Washington Mystics and Sales played for the expansion Orlando Miracle. The Hall of Fame Enshrinement game, sponsored by Buick, tips off at 7 p.m. Saturday. Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman-Cline will coach the WNBA team, which also includes Jennifer Gillom (Phoenix Mercury), Shannon Johnson (Orlando Miracle), Merlakia Jones (Cleveland Rockers), Wendy Palmer (Detroit Shock), and Sophia Witherspoon (New York Liberty). The national team, expected to form the nucleus of the 2000 Olympics squad, includes Ruthie Bolton-Holifield (Sacramento Monarchs), Cynthia Cooper (Houston Comets), Yolanda Griffith (Sacramento Monarchs), Chamique Holdsclaw (Washington Mystics), Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles Sparks), Nikki McCray (Washington Mystics), DeLisha Milton (Los Angeles Sparks), Katie Smith (Minnesota Lynx), Dawn Staley (Charlotte Sting) and Natalie Williams (Utah Starzz). The team is coached by Nell Fortner, who guided the United States to a gold medal at the 1998 World Championships. Fortner was recently named head coach of Indiana's WNBA expansion team, which will begin play next year.
