U.S. hockey defeats Canada 3-2
DENVER (AP) -- Karyn Bye scored a third-period goal to lift the United States women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Canadian national team Friday night. Bye took a pass from Julie Chu and scored from the right circle at 13:05. U.S. goaltender Ali Brewer had 18 saves, while Canada's Sami Jo Small had 25. The game, held in conjunction with NHL All-Star weekend, was watched by 9,562, the largest crowd ever at a women's hockey game in the United States. The previous attendance record was 7,500 in San Jose in 1998. Canada took a 2-1 lead in the first period on goals by Therese Brisson and Hayley Wickenheiser. America's Krissy Wendell opened the scoring, beating Small from the slot at 4:15. Brisson tied it from the point at 7:58, and Wickenheiser scored on a backhand wraparound at 16:03. Natalie Darwitz made it 2-2 at 14:09 of the second period, poking in a rebound of Cammi Granato's shot. The U.S. team, which beat Canada in the gold-medal game of the 1998 Olympics, extended its record to 3-1 over the Canadians this season. Overall, the Americans are 32-1-0 this season, while Canada is 8-3. The Americans prevailed 5-4 Wednesday night in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, and thus captured the second-annual TSN Challenge, a two-game series.
