Marty Burns, a senior writer for SI.com, joined the website as its NBA writer in 2000 after six years at Sports Illustrated.

Born and raised in Chicago, Ill., Burns earned a master's in journalism from Northwestern University in 1989. He did his undergrad work at the University of Notre Dame, where he got a BA in English. Burns spent two years as a sports reporter for the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Journal-Gazette, and then two more as a free-lance preps writer at the Chicago Tribune before joining SI as a reporter in 1994. He became a staff writer in 1996 and covered a variety of sports for the magazine, including football and golf, before finding a home on the NBA beat. Among his favorite stories written for SI were Michigan's upset of Ohio State in '96, Peyton Manning's first NFL game and a look at the Chicago Bulls' triangle offense.

Burns enjoys reading, golf and pickup basketball. He lives in Chicago with his wife and son.
