> BIOGRAPHY

Steve Aschburner is a contributing writer for SI.com, specializing in pro basketball. He first joined SI.com in 2007 after nearly three decades as a sports journalist at daily newspapers, including the Minneapolis Star Tribune from 1986 to 2007. Like a lot of his peers who stick around long enough, Aschburner has won various state and local newspaper awards; he also has served as president or vice president of the Professional Basketball Writers Association since 2005. He covered the NBA and Timberwolves for the Minneapolis Star Tribune for 13 seasons but, as good as Kevin Garnett was, he cites the 1995-96 NBA champion Chicago Bulls as the best team he's ever seen.

Before his tenure at the Star Tribune, Aschburner worked at the Milwaukee Journal (1981-85) and the Lexington Herald-Leader (1980-81). He is the author of The Good, the Bad & the Ugly: Minnesota Twins, (Triumph Books, March 2008) and also writes about sports and other topics for MinnPost.com. He writes three times a week during the basketball season for SI.com. "Basketball is my favorite to cover, football is my favorite sport to watch on TV, hockey is my favorite sport to watch live and baseball is the only one worth listening to on the radio," he says.

Aschburner received a B.A. in Journalism from Marquette University and an M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota. He and his wife, Wendy, live in Minneapolis and have one daughter, Gretchen.

EXTRA POINTS

Favorite SI Vault story: Welcome To His World (Nov. 29, 1976). "It's a Frank Deford piece on Al McGuire in 1976-77 college basketball preview. I was covering Marquette back then for the campus newspaper, with the team headed to the NCAA championship, and realized what a rookie I was."
Writers who have inspired your work: Bill Gleason, former sports columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times; John Schulian, former sports columnist in Chicago and Philadelphia, and Mike Royko, the ultimate newspaper columnist in Chicago.
Hobbies/Interests: Jazz collection, filmmaking, travel.
Person you would most like to interview: Clint Eastwood. I want to know how he stashed his reservoirs of energy and talent to be peaking at an age when so many are ordering soft food.
Favorite movie: Midnight Run. "Vastly underrated, wholly unexpected "buddy" team of Robert DeNiro-Charles Grodin, with endless number of great lines, and a blues soundtrack. I'd have said The Godfather but everyone says The Godfather."
Most memorable meal: Original Pancake House (Edina, MN or Portland, OR). "It's my Death Row meal because, by that point, cholesterol doesn't matter."
