Brandie Burton: "I would have to say my greatest moment was in '98 when I won the du Maurier Classic." Donald Miralle/Allsport |
CNNSI Host: Welcome to today's LPGA chat with Brandie Burton. Hi Brandie. Thanks for joining us.
Brandie Burton: Thank you very much.
From Terri in Woodland Hills, Calif.: It is great to see you back in action. What are you doing to prevent injuries (Physical therapy, weights or other training)? All the best to you and your family.
Brandie Burton: To prevent furthering my injury from relapsing, I've been doing physical therapy twice a week. It's a program I've been doing with hand weights. The practicing I've been doing to get back my game is all the exercise I need.
From Allan in Lancashire, England: You came in second at the British Open in 1998 held at Royal Lytham & St. Anne's. Will you be trying to go one better this year at Royal Birkdale? Also would you like to see the British Open always being held at traditional seaside links courses or would you prefer it to be held on Parkland courses like Woburn? Keep healthy!
Brandie Burton: I do intend on playing at Royal Birkdale - I'm excited, I've heard a lot of great things about the course. As far as the British Open, I would prefer seeing it just like it is - rotating courses to get a variety. It's nice to see different courses year in and year out.
From Jennie in Watertown, N.Y.: I really enjoy watching your swing. I'm wondering what your swing thoughts are when driving the ball.
Brandie Burton: Pretty much my swing is basic. I don't like to think a lot when I am swinging. I just think about tempo. Off the golf course I work on mechanics. On the course it's just one swing thought and the rhythm tempo.
From Bret in Washington D.C.: What do you view as your greatest moment on a golf course?
Brandie Burton: I would have to say my greatest moment was in '98 when I won the du Maurier classic. I had been winless for five years and to break through was great.
From Lisa in Columbus, Ohio: After getting back from your injury, do you think you can become one of the top players again?
Brandie Burton: I definitely think I'll become a top player again because with what I had repaired in my right shoulder I can swing like I want to and without pain. It's just a matter of working hard and getting back into competition again.
From Tim in Atlanta: How much do you think your injuries have held you back this season?
Brandie Burton: This season, just the fact that I was out 14 months, my game wasn't really sharp when I came back. I'm at 90% now, not 100% just yet. I can't practice like I want to. I'm doing quantity, not quality right now. It's just a matter of getting my shoulder 100%.
From Brad in Columbia, S.C.: If you could have one shot to "do over" what would it be?
Brandie Burton: The one shot I'd take back was the one that went in the creek in '98 at the Solheim Cup. I think it was the 12th hole. Dottie Pepper was my partner.
From Raymond in New York: Why do you think international players had so much success on the LPGA tour?
Brandie Burton: I think they're just very talented. You've got a lot of Swedish golfers that grew up in golf schools. They come over here for the competition and to go to college. That gives them more exposure to competition that helps them be successful out on the Tour.
From Brian in Atlanta: Do you think the LPGA will ever reach the popularity of the PGA or even other women's sports like tennis, figure skating, or basketball? If so, what does it need to do to get there?
Brandie Burton: I think we can get pretty close. The Golf Channel and ESPN and the other networks have helped the LPGA with the exposure. The more exposure the better the reception will be from the public. We can play - just getting that message out will help the LPGA.
From Guest: Who is/was your role model?
Brandie Burton: I've had a lot of role models growing up. Joanne Carner was my role model as a kid. Nancy Lopez, Pat Bradley. I respect all of the Hall of Famers - they laid the groundwork for our tour. I used to watch them all the time.
CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have for today. Thanks again for joining us today, Brandie. And good luck at the Philips Invitational this weekend.
Brandie Burton: Thank you very much for having me.
