Ron Meyer likes Doug Flutie's mental toughness, but he's wary of his height and arm strength. Rick Stewart/Allsport |
From Wisconsinfootballfan: Which defensive free agent should the Packers pursue?
Ron Meyer: The Packers should go back and sign Reggie White for one more go-around.
From Champ316: Mr Meyer: Who is better, Doug Flutie or Rob Johnson and why?
Ron Meyer: Tough, tough question. You gotta love the fie and competitiveness that Flutie brings to the field... Captain America. However, Rob Johnson has more innate talent to win in the NFL.
From Robert Hounsell: Ron,why is there so much talk About the NFC Central WR's? Don't you think there's talent elsewhere?
Ron Meyer: There's absolutely talent elsewhere. You have a 4X100 relay team sitting in St. Louis. And give the Redskins a little credit, too.
From Cowboy: Ron, should Randall Cunningham or Troy Aikman be the man in Dallas?
Ron Meyer: There's no question it's Troy Aikman. Randall Cunningham is purely in a backup role for the Cowboys.
From SuperJohn_96: Mr. Meyer: I've read that Randy Moss and Cris Carter are both really impressed by Culpepper's skills, and have even gone so far as to call their coach to rave about him ... Is he the real deal like the Vikings seem to think?
Ron Meyer: From my observation, which is extremely limited to last year's pre-season games, Culpepper has to come light years to be successful. However, Moss and Carter have been working out with Daunte all summer in Florida and they say he's improved dramatically. We will see under game conditions.
From DaBoys: Ron, what do you think of Dallas' receiving corps?
Ron Meyer: The loss of Michael Irvin will be felt. When he went down with injury last year the Cowboys were 3-0 prior to that. His leadership and intangible impact on that team will be missed. Let alone his play-making ability. However, Jerry Jones did get the best receiver available in Joey Galloway. This is the best that they can do under the circumstances.
From ice: What do you think about the Niners QB spot?
Ron Meyer: Very much a question mark. Jeff Garcia is going to be the starter; however, the surrounding cast both offensively and defensively may be the poorest in the NFL, so whoever starts at QB is a moot.
From BEARS2000: Trev, will Urlacher and free agents make the Bears Monsters of the Midway again?
Trev Alberts: They're not gonna be the Monsters of the Midway, but at least they can get on the Midway. I really like Brian Urlacher. I think he'll make a huge impact on the defense as well Thomas Smith. I think the Bears have a shot at the playoff berth.
From hopper: Trev: What do you think of Elvis Grbac trying to lead in K.C.?
Trev Alberts: It seems like every year, the Chiefs are waiting for Elvis Grbac to be a big-time QB. He's a decent QB, but he'll never be one of the elite ones. Kansas City is a good football team, but still dependant on a solid running game.
From Macadamia: Hey Trev, when Jamal Lewis wins Rookie of the Year award, will you admit you were wrong?
Trev Alberts: No... because he won't win the Rookie of Year award. Other than picking me fifth, this might be the worst fifth pick in the history of the NFL Draft.
From Coach: The intermediate passing games seem to be taking the West Coast Offense one step further, what are defenses going to have to do to defense this?
Trev Alberts: . Everybody went to the West Coast offenses and defenses adjusted and now all you hear about is the need to vertically stretch the field.
From Robert Hounsell: Trev, you guys have a lot of faith in Peter Warrick, but he's never played a game in the NFL to base it on?
Trev Alberts: Well, that's basically how you judge every rookie but that's the crap shoot. I watched him very closely in college and I haven't seen a playmaker of his ability in four years. Why that wouldn't translate to the NFL, I don't know. Hey, see ya next week!
From gordo: Why do you think Cunningham went to Dallas when he could have gone to Detroit and got some playing time?
Bob Lorenz: Probably because of the money, the organization and the chance that a more fragile Troy Aikman might go down and Randall can step in.
From Macadamia: Hey, Bob, do you agree with Trev that Jamal Lewis was not a good pick?
Bob Lorenz: I'm not as harsh a critic of the pick but I do agree that he was a reach. I also agree that I never would have taken Trev Alberts with a fifth pick.
From VIKE4LIFE: Bob, you're the brains of the show. What do you think of the Vikes?
Bob Lorenz: Thanks for calling me "The Brains." I wish I could get Trev and Ron to agree. I think we'll know a lot more about the Vikings a couple weeks into the season when we see how Daunte Culpepper develops and handles pressure. But I do think they have a legitimate shot, at least, a wild-card berth.
From Hello: Bob, how well do you think Ron Dayne will play this year?
Bob Lorenz: That one is still up in the air for me. I like Ron Dayne's bruising running style, but I'm concerned about him taking more high-impact hits at the pro level and his playing on artificial turf.
From Greg: Bob, do you think that the Redskins might try and sign any free agent wide receivers to back up Michael Westbrook and Albert Connell?
Bob Lorenz: Not right now. I think they're probably more concerned with signing Arrington and Samuels right now and there's always a chance that either after camp or after the pre-season games a better quality free agent receiver will be out there.
From DougFlultie: Is it safe to pencil the Bills into one of the playoff spots in the AFC, and who is your favorite player??
Bob Lorenz: Yes, it's safe to pencil the Bills in only if their young players develop quickly this season. As for favorite players, I was sorry to see Steve Young retire because I love guys that get dirty, will dive and lay it all on the line for the sake of winning for the team.
From toadio: Who will be the quarterback for Denver Broncos? Brian Griese, Gus Ferrotte or someone else?
Bob Lorenz: Brian Griese will be the starter after the reps he got last season and the experience he gained even if he did struggle.
From Robert Hounsell: Hey Bob, as a Pats fan I find it amazing that no one has even mentioned that Ben Coates is gone. What is your opinion on his leaving the Pats?
Bob Lorenz: I think it certainly hurts them in the passing game because he gave Drew Bledsoe a solid option. He had a down year last year, but that doesn't mean he still isn't a quality pass-catcher and blocker. By the way, if he doesn't sign soon, I imagine it's a topic we'll discuss on a future "NFL Preview."
From OmahaVike: Bob, how do you think the upcoming divisional realignment will play out combined with free agency?
Bob Lorenz: I think it will still take a while for owners and their litany of lawyers to come to a compromise. Thanks and thanks for watching the show!
CNNSI Host: The "NFL Preview Show" gang will be back next Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EDT to take your questions.
