He's no Peter Warrick

Anquan Boldin Anquan Boldin looks forward to stepping into the spotlight for the Seminoles. Scott Halleran/Allsport

CNNSI.com chatted with Florida State wide receiver Anquan Boldin on August 10, 2000. A transcript of his chat follows:

CNNSI Host: Thank you for joining our college football chat with Florida State's Anquan Boldin. Welcome Anquan!

From UofMNick: Everybody is comparing you to Peter Warrick. How is your game different?
Anquan Boldin: Well, compared to Pete, I think I'm more of a physical player than he was. He was more of a finesse player than me; I'm more aggressive than he is.

From garrette in Jacksonville, Fla.: Heading into the 2000 season the Seminoles look tough all around, but from a player's standpoint, what is your major concern?
Anquan Boldin: As a player, there are no major concerns. The only concern I might have is our team getting complacent. I think that if we stay together as a team and don't get complacent, we'll be in pretty good shape.

From Sam in Tallahassee, Fla.: What are your impressions of Javon Walker? Do you feel he can contribute as a big, speedy WR that we haven't had in a while?
Anquan Boldin: I think Javon will make an immediate impact. Javon Walker is a great ball player, he's a deep ball threat, and he's also a possession receiver.

From Buzz: Do you think that FSU will have a better team this coming season compared to last years team, that won the national title?
Anquan Boldin: I think across the board we have a better team. Chris Weinke is a year older, we have seniors across the board, we have a lot of veteran players, players that were there last year. We have new guys who played in the big games last year.

From RegiNOLE in Fort Lauderdale: Is there a possibility that if asked (or if you asked) you might switch back to quarterback next year with Weinke leaving? I was so looking forward to you at quarterback!!!
Anquan Boldin: I think the only way I may go back to quarterback is if the team needed me there. If Coach Bowden came to me and asked me to make the transition, I think that I would.

From Guest: Do you wear your championship ring a lot?
Anquan Boldin: Actually, my mom has my championship ring; I figure if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have it.

From desierto: Which team on your 2000 schedule do you think will be the toughest opponent?
Anquan Boldin: I think our toughest opponents are always Miami and Florida.

From Steve in Bradenton, Fla.: What are your thoughts on playing the ‘Canes this year at the Orange Bowl?
Anquan Boldin: For me, it's like something I always dreamed of, playing in the Orange Bowl, but as a player, I'm looking forward to it. Everyone is talking about Miami rising back to that championship team, but I think the FSU-Miami rivalry needs to get back where it was in the late 80s or early 90s.

From cfbfan in Atlanta, Ga.: Anquan, Tell me about the recruiting process. The Gators were convinced you would be one of theirs. Was FSU a last-minute decision?
Anquan Boldin: No, FSU wasn't a last-minute decision. As far as me committing to the Gators, that never happened. I don't know what gave Coach Spurrier the idea that I was leaning towards Florida.

From Chris Black in Philadelphia, Pa.: Do you feel any pressure of having to replace Peter Warrick?
Anquan Boldin: Actually, I'm not trying to replace Pete. Pete did a lot of great things at Florida State, and being someone who's following him, I just want to make a name for myself.

From Mark Holt in Raleigh, N.C.: Who on the team shows the greatest example of work ethic?
Anquan Boldin: That's kind of hard, because our whole team has a great work ethic. There's not one player on the team who relaxes, who takes a play off.

From Guest: Do you watch a lot of pro football on Sundays?
Anquan Boldin: Yes, I do. I try to watch mostly the guys who play the same position that I do.

From Raghu in Tallahassee, Fla.: How is the morale of the team about winning it all this year after losing All-Americans Warrick, Corey Simon, Janikowski and the reliable receiver Dugans? Who's going to take the burden of the wide receiving corps?
Anquan Boldin: I think that everyone on the team wants to repeat, even with losing Corey, Pete, Dugans. As far as the receiver position goes, with losing Peter and Dugans, I think as a group collectively, the receivers will step up and rise to the occasion.

From UofMNick: If FSU doesn't make it to the National Title game, who do you think will?
Anquan Boldin: If we don't make it, it will probably be another Florida team and probably a team out of the Big Ten or Big Twelve.

From Buzz: Who is your favorite NFL team and what player is your favorite to watch?
Anquan Boldin: My favorite team in the NFL, I really don't have one, but my favorite player to watch is Jerry Rice. Jerry Rice is the greatest receiver ever, and his work ethic is just amazing.

From noleman: Why did you switch from QB to WR, you were a pretty good QB in high school?
Anquan Boldin: I made the transition because I wanted to make an immediate impact on the team, wherever that would have been.

From GainesvilleNole: Have you been lining up at quarterback in the shotgun formation at all this fall?
Anquan Boldin: Yes, I think they want to do some of the same stuff with me that they did with Pete.

From Guest: Why did you pick jersey No. 4 at FSU?
Anquan Boldin: When I first came, I really wanted #6, which was my high school number, but when I got there, Derrick Gibson already had it, so #4 was the only single number that was available, so I took it.

From Buzz: What do you do in the off-season to prepare for camp?
Anquan Boldin: Well, I work on speed drills a lot. I'm working hard in the weight room, and watching a lot of film.

CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have today with Anquan. Thanks for joining us and best of luck this season.
Anquan Boldin: Thank you.
