Reactions: Subway Series Plot lines aplenty in Yankees-Mets matchupUpdated: Wednesday October 18, 2000 8:22 AM
Does anyone outside of New York care if the World Series is an all-Gotham affair? Not really, according to CNNSI.com users. Some feel that a Mets-Yankees matchup is just what baseball needs, but most couldn't care less what happens. A sampling of the responses to what CNNSI.com users think of a Subway Series follows: As my team isn't involved, it will hold my interest until my Eastern Standard Time Zone bed time.
The Yankees dynasty vs. the pretender Mets, Clemens vs. Piazza, Steinbrenner's ego vs. Valentine's ego, the Bronx vs. Queens, big money vs. big money in the Big Apple? Hey, it doesn't get any better than this!
New Yorkers are the most arrogant and provincial people I have ever lived among. So I am totally sympathetic to anyone in another part of the country who is put off by a Subway Series. I am already sickened by abuse of train metaphors in the headlines. As a lifelong Yankees fan, I'd like nothing better than to see the Mets go down, but so much more is at stake now. It has become too serious to lightheartedly enjoy the Series. It's not a Subway Series anyway since the Mets' largest fan base is from little enclaves of white privilege on Long Island.
The ONLY good thing about an all-N.Y. Series is that one of them will lose!
Please! Of course everyone wants to see the two best teams in baseball go at it! The Mets dominated the Cards and whoever wins the Yanks-M's series deserves to be there also! And as for the Subway Series: It doesn't get any better than that. Excellent pitching, explosive offense -- whomever is not tuning in is not a true baseball fan anyway. How are you gonna watch an entire baseball season and not tune in to see who wins the World Series, regardless of who is playing?
I admit seeing Roger Clemens bat at Shea Stadium would be fun to watch, but outside of that, I would much rather see A-Rod and Edgar play. If it's all N.Y., Buffy the Vampire Slayer is looking pretty good.
Like Mr. McCallum, I don't care for either the Yanks or Mets, but a Subway Series would be fun to watch. It is a rare moment in baseball history and will definitely help bring fan interest back to the game.
I'm openly rooting for Seattle. In my opinion, New York sports teams have dominated American sports for too long. It's time to spread the wealth around to small-market teams. The Yankees' dominance over the past five years again proves that big market/big money teams have such an inherent advantage over small market/small money teams. I don't care about the ratings. I don't care about the advertisers. I don't care about the networks. I would just like to see cities such as Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Oakland, Denver, Cincinnati, San Diego, Seattle, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, etc., get a chance at glory once in awhile. Besides, there are also some 250 million Americans who don't really believe, like New Yorkers do, that NYC is center of the known universe.
This has to be the worst baseball playoffs ever. The Yankees make the playoffs with an eight-game skid and, not to mention the worst record of the playoff teams, and are probably going to make the series again while the Cardinals sweep the awesome Braves but choke big-time on a team the Braves have dominated forever. Now all we have to look forward to is a crappy World Series in New York. I personally will not be watching, I hate the Yankees and the Mets and advocate a seven-game division series and dislike homefield advantage. The players need more rest before starting the postseason.
Ugh! I'm getting a little queasy... The thought of the Subway Series makes me want to vomit. I won't be able to watch any TV for two weeks! Although it will be funny to see the lowest TV ratings for a World Series ever (outside of the Northeast coast), since everyone else will be bedridden with nausea. Oh geez... I've got to lie down... Where's the Pepto?
Frankly my dear, we just don't give a damn! We are going to enjoy OUR World Series, once the Yankees finish off the Mariners. Both teams got here fair and square. You towns with your fancy ballparks and diversity-challenged neighborhoods get to watch us throw a party where modern baseball started, and you ain't invited. Despite all the bad things that continue to be said and believed about this city, our cream eventually rises to the top in anything! I would like to take this oppportunity to say "What's up" to my man John Rocker.
I can't wait until the World Series is over. I hope someone wins it in four just to expedite the returning back to normalcy of ANY broadcast originating from New York. I can't even watch CNNfn without seeing some financial analyst singing the Mets' team song. I guess it's important to New York, but why New Yorkers think the rest of the country should be enthralled is somewhat amusing to me.
This is a case of the "haves" having it all. You think viewership of the Olympics was bad for NBC on TV, wait until you see what the World Series brings if it is a "Subway Series."
As a former New Yorker, of course, I want to see a Subway Series. However, as a Yankee fan, I secretly hope it doesn't happen. What if the Mets win? All my years of gloating about our superiority will be gone. I can't think of anything worse than having to play second fiddle to the "Amazin's." And for Met fans, a Subway win isn't all it's cracked up to be. What are the Met fans gonna say if they are no longer the underdogs? To sum up, a Subway Series could destroy the beautiful harmony that exists in New York. Could you imagine a world where the Yankees are the underdogs to the powerhouse Mets? God help us all!
A Subway Series is just what baseball does not need right now. Both teams are comprised of some of the most easily hateable figures in baseball. A traitorous Rocket, a whiny Jeter, a bought-and-sold Justice and Hill, the Boss, a crybaby Piazza, Agbayani's defense, having to see Fox's graphics on "How Timo Perez Got to N.Y.", Armando Benitez and Tim McCarver's voice are all reasons that I won't be watching this World Series.
