Reactions: Should Aikman retire?

Overwhelming majority say it's time to hang 'em up

Posted: Wednesday December 13, 2000 3:19 PM

Fred Hickman called a Timeout! to urge Troy Aikman after the quarterback to retire before incurring concussion No. 5. Hickman also called for Jerry Jones to reward the quarterback that won three Super Bowl titles for the Dallas Cowboys. CNNSI.com users overwhelmingly agreed that Aikman's health should be his main concern. A sample of the responses follows:

I strongly agree with Fred. Troy needs to walk away from the game with what pride and health he has. After suffering numerous concussions over the past three seasons he really needs to retire and concentrate on a different line of work. He has been a professional, a leader and Super Bowl champion and will be missed by the Dallas fans.
Jeff Gac, Marysville, Wash.

Way to go Fred! It is about time someone had the guts to call out Jerry Jones and Troy Aikman and tell them it is time to give up. Troy had his good years and is just trying to hold on to past glory. It is time to fade away like Steve Young, and get a cushy desk job, like.... Fred.
John Adams, Butte, Mont.

Right on, Fred! I couldn't agree more. It is sad to see a player of Aikman's caliber go out on such a sad note, but it's time to call it a career in football and to get on with the rest of his life.
Tim Hudspeth, Corpus Christi, Texas

Concussions take years to fully recover from. Every time Troy Aikman receives another blow to the head it compounds the effect. He needs to retire before he suffers permanent brain damage a la Muhammed Ali.
Richard Ernsberger, Huntsville, Ala.

Fred: Oft times I think that you have a deficiency in the same grey matter that you speak of with regards Mr. Aikman, however you couldn't be more right in this case, and the comment about Emmitt. Jerry Jones owes them both a lot.
Kevin Croucher, Manama, Bahrain

Message to Jerry:
Reward Troy with what he deserved after all these years. Stop believing that the current Cowboys is the championship caliber team. It's time to move on.
Azahari Arifin, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A well-spoken half minute, Fred! Jerry Jones has been nothing but a self-absorbed, egotistical, brain-dead-on-draft-day cancer since the day he purchased the Cowboys. His inability to select real coaches and real players has cost Aikman an early retirement. Mediocre to losing seasons and the reality for Cowboy fans everywhere that we will never see another post season game as long as Jerry Jones and his over expanded ego are running this collection of mediocrity he calls a football team.
Joel Flores, Austin, Texas

All good things must come to an end. Aikman is indebted to his O-line for only allowing two concussions this season. Imagine if he was playing for New England. He wouldn't be able to count to two by season's end. Let Troy become the personnel director. How about Coach Aikman?
Doug, Los Angeles, Calif.

When a player wins a Super Bowl, he is often heard saying, "I'm going to Disney Land". If Aikman gets any more concussions, he'll be saying, "I think I'm in Dizzy Land".
Kevin Cornella, Yokota Air Base, Japan

Jerry Jones owes Troy Aikman nothing outside his contract. If Aikman retires after this season then Jerry should NOT pay him anything beyond the contractual agreement. Fred, this is a business. The money can be put to better use by rebuilding the team.
Rosh Panesar, Montreal

I agree that Jerry needs to urge Troy to retire and retire NOW. However, I don't think Jerry has tarnished the Cowboys. Since purchasing the Cowboys, they have recorded record numbers of attendance, wins, playoff appearances and Super Bowl wins. As for Emmitt, he has three years left in the tank.
Jared, Amarillo, Texas

Why couldn't Tom Hicks buy the Cowboys instead of A-Rod? It's obvious Jerry doesn't want to lose his top jersey salesman (now that Deion's gone). Troy is a competitor and won't quit as long as he can still tell which bell to answer. However, Arrington's hit was just a good, clean collision. When those start knocking a player out, it's time to count your Super Bowl rings and go join the front office.
Roger Houston, Austin, Texas

Fred, I couldn't agree more. Being a Giants fan, I can't say I've ever even CONSIDERED rooting for the Cowboys but Aikman always carried himself with class. Please Troy, retire.
Dan Montalto, Chicago, Ill.

Troy! If this isn't a hint that you need to retire, then your brain is already permanently scrambled! I agree Jerry owes him big, but Troy shouldn't wait for Jerry to give him a handout. Keep your health while you got it! Troy has done his business and made his mark. He will always be remembered as one of the best. Let's just hope he will be able to remember that.
Drew, Lawrenceville, Ga.
