Users recall the biggest moments of 2000

Andres Galarraga Andres Galarraga won his battle with cancer and was runaway comeback player of the year. AP

This past year provided sports fans with many unforgettable moments. We asked CNNSI.com users to recall the events they will remember most about the year 2000. A sample of the responses follows:

The best sports moment of 2000 was the standing ovation Andres Galarraga received when he stepped into the batter's box for his first at bat of the season. Which signified the gratitude the fans felt for him in terms of beating the cancer that had felled him last year.
Adam Small, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Tiger Woods lapping the field at the U.S. Open. He was a man among boys the entire year.
Branden Ashburn, Indianapolis

Lance Armstrong winning his second consecutive Tour de France. For overcoming cancer, winning the world's most difficult athletic event, and acting as a spokesperson and inspiration for cancer survivors throughout the world, Lance Armstrong's victory was the highlight of the year.
Greg Felton, Seattle

My vote for the most memorable sports moment of 2000 has to go to the signing of Alex Rodriguez by the Texas Rangers. And it is not a vote for a good moment, either. This moment will be remembered as the moment when baseball officially began its final death throes. This will mark the time when baseball owners truly lost their minds. And now that the horse is out of the barn, we won't be able to get it back in again. Our national past time is in its final demise. May it rest in peace.
Jim McD., San Diego

The most memorable moment of the year was Cathy Freeman's win in the women's 400-meter sprint at the Olympics. She was simply captivating. All the protests in the world could not have made the same impact on her cause.
Ari Tomasson, Reykjavik, Iceland

Venus Williams' Wimbledon victory was the greatest moment of 2000. You saw an incredibly muscular, highly-intelligent girl finally reap the benefits of years of hard work and putting up with public criticism. You saw the sheer joy and exhilaration on her face. After smacking a tennis ball at 127 mph and thoroughly dominating her opponents, you saw a joyous little girl realizing her dream (and the dreams of millions of African-Americans), overcoming racism and lack of access for blacks in tennis.
Barry, Phoenix

As a Hoosier, I'll never forget this year for two reasons. We will never get to see Bobby Knight in that familiar red sweater coaching our Hoosiers again, nor will we ever see Larry Bird coaching our Pacers again. As all good Catholics say in Indiana -- in the name of the Father, Bobby and Larry Amen.
Brandon Bueltel, Las Vegas

The most memorable moment of 2000 is when the Olympic swimmer from Africa who was allowed to compete without a qualifying time. The world watched in tears and heavy hearts, as the only talent he had was the ability to try.
Caren Branson, Crawfordsville, Ind.

I enjoyed that July night when Jim Gray made a complete fool of himself, after asking Pete Rose about his banishment from baseball!
Derek V., Edmonton, Canada

You forgot one. Vince Carter flying OVER a 7-foot-2-inch Frenchman for one of the most spectacular athletic moves ever.
Edward Young, Philadelphia

To me, I can't pick one. I am a Tennessee Titans fan so of course the "Music City Miracle" and the "Longest Yard" will stand out to me for a long time. The "Music City Miracle" will always be a great moment and the "Longest Yard" will always be depressing. But I am proud that the Tennessee Titans were part of the most exciting Super Bowl ever.
Jamison Evans, Johnson City

My most memorable moment was when soccer great Cameroon defeated giant Brazil in the Olympic games and went on to win the gold medal, a memorable moment indeed.
Alfred Kange, Eden Prairie, Minn.

U.S. baseball team capturing the gold medal in the Olympics by beating the best team in world, Cuba. What about the U.S women's softball team coming back to win the gold medal? These players and teams are what champions are about in team sports.
Tom Justice, Panama City, Panama

New Jersey Devils overcame being down three games to one to Philly in the Eastern Conference Finals. Then went on to beat the defending Stanley Cup Champions to win their second Cup in six years. Now that is one of the best feel good stories of the year.
George Bednarski, Stamford, Conn.

Felix Trinidad vs. Fernando Vargas fight, by far the most memorable event in 2000.
Pedro Armstrong, Los Angeles

Nothing tops the last play of the Super Bowl. It was a fittingly breath taking end, to the end of one of the best halves of football ever.
Mike Metcalf, Plano, Texas
