Reactions: 2000 Champions Most users agree it was Tiger's yearPosted: Thursday December 21, 2000 12:49 AMUpdated: Thursday December 21, 2000 12:49 AM
In a year filled with strong performances and great champions we asked CNNSI.com users who was the most dominant of the year 2000? Most of you agreed it was Tiger Woods by far, but there were some who had a different opinion. A sample of the responses follows: Tiger, no question. The guy had nine victories in one year, and just absolutely dominated everywhere he played. He showed he can blitz the competition, like he did in the U.S. and British Opens. And he can also perform under pressure, down to the wire, against Bob May. Even other PGA golfers were asking if Tiger was playing during a particular week or not, for the fact that if he wasn't, they believed they could actually win. He is simply amazing.
Lance Armstrong, barely three years removed from cancer, went on to soundly defeat the rest of the cycling world in the Tour de France. His first victory was "tainted" because some European cyclists claimed he was riding with a watered-down pack (due to drug abuse by the absent riders). He proved them wrong by winning the race a second year in a row. Only a fractured vertebra caused by an accident with a car kept him from placing better in the Olympics. Lance is even more than a hero of the bike saddle, surviving cancer and acting as a ray of hope for near terminal patients who have little or none.
I think it's a shame that you left out this year's MLS champion the Kansas City Wizards. They were easily the dominant team of the season. And not only deserved to win the MLS Cup, but should have gotten at least a mention in the dominant champions' column.
I think the New York Yankees have proved that they are the most dominating champions of the year 2000! Everyone had said they were finished because of their losing streak at the end of the season. But as true champions do, they fought back and won what they deserved, a third World Series title!
I would have to say Michael Shumacher. He won nine of 17 races for a .529 winning percentage. Tiger Woods did not have that kind of winning percentage. Apples and oranges, maybe, but Shumacher was impressive, none the less. Also Shumacher had at least one extremely tough competitor in Mika Hakkinen for the entire season. I believe no one can compete with Tiger when he is at the top of his game (which he was for most of the majors).
The level of competition (parity) in the PGA was unequaled in the field of sports, with very few back-to-back victors during the season. Welcome Tiger Woods to the scene. Currently the feeling expressed by many professional golfers equates to "Who plays for second this week?". Week in and week out people now expect Tiger to win each and every tournament. During his run of nine in a row not only did he meet these impossible standards he proved he could do it in a dominant fashion.
Both Tiger Woods and Venus Williams had phenomenal years. I think that Tiger Woods' incredible record over the last year gives him the slight edge over Venus Williams as the most dominant champion of the year 2000. But Williams is not very far behind.
Tiger Woods! No brainer! Unless you've been living on Mars or under a rock for the past 12 months, it would be unthinkable for a person not to declare Tiger the champion of champions of 2000. If there were a Tiger jersey, sales for most other athletes' jerseys would be miniscule. Don't be surprised if he tops 2000 with "2001 - A Tiger Odyssey"!
I might get ragged on for this, but come on, guys! The Houston Comets are great! They've never been touched!
Tiger Woods is the most dominant figure in any sport since the beginning of time. His stats and his world ranking prove my point.
The most dominant champ was the one you guys seemed to have overlooked. The Kansas City Wizards dominated all season in a sport that is very difficult to dominate in. Did you forget, or do you guys have a personal vendetta against the MLS? Whether Sports Illustrated likes it or not, the MLS is a major sports league and deserves more recognition.
Venus Williams, over and over she crushed the so-called No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players. Go figure!
Tiger Woods is the new "America's Team". His following captures people of all ages, backgrounds and hometowns. Everyone wants to see him blow away current records. He is truly a role model to our young, as he shares his legend and speaks to people not down to them. He is respectful of his parents, doesn't mind giving autographs and is revered by his peers.
