Some consider Ray Lewis to be the regular season MVP, and if he leads the Ravens to the title, would be up for Super Bowl MVP as well. AP |
CNNSI Host: Welcome to today's Super Bowl chat with CNN/SI's Pat Kirwan. Hello Pat!
Pat Kirwan: I'm glad to be here three days away from the game.
From Peter: What is your opinion of those who feel the Super Bowl will be boring because its two defensive teams?
Pat Kirwan: I think people that love football, and understand what they are watching love this kind of game. The margin of error is so small. One mistake, even in the first quarter could decide this game. People in football are excited about this contest.
From Davey: Where do you think Trent Green will be next season?
Pat Kirwan: There are a number of teams that are looking for a quarterback. I think Seattle or San Diego are probable choices for him.
From OilGriese: I'm wondering who your pick is for this year's Super Bowl MVP. I'm thinking Kerry Collins.
Pat Kirwan: Well, Mr. Griese, this really a great opportunity for a defensive MVP. Of course that player will come from the winning team. The Ravens' leading candidate is Ray Lewis, and on the Giants I like the chances for Michael Strahan. But I personally would be happy if it went to Kerry Collins, after all he has been through.
From Lars: Hi Pat. Which team appears to be the most prepared for the game?
Pat Kirwan: At this point both teams are extremely well prepared. But I was at the Giants' practice yesterday. What was obvious to me was how loose they were. I like that as an indication of how ready they are. Also they have done very little talking this week as compared to the Ravens and I like that too.
From BrownsFan: Do you feel that Art Modell will get elected to the Hall of Fame?
Pat Kirwan: Not if the entire vote were in Cleveland. But since it is national, and he is one of the old-time owners I think he will get in.
From BrownsFan: Where do you think Bill Parcells will end up?
Pat Kirwan: I expect Bill Parcells to get into the Hall of Fame also, and I expect him to coach again.
From Davey: What chance do you give Trent Dilfer at shattering all the Super Bowl passing records?
Pat Kirwan: NONE!
From Kevin: I know it's a little early, but who are some of the players you consider candidates for the Houston Texans' first selection next year?
Pat Kirwan: First off you usually start off with the quarterback position. So, let's go with Drew Henson from Michigan. When there are top-flight quarterbacks they will go quickly. Also Brian Griese and Elvis Grbac have played much better than where they were drafted, and that will influence personnel people when they evaluate a quarterback.
From Ravensfan: Why does the media continue to disrespect Dilfer after winning 10 games in a row?
Pat Kirwan: I like Trent Dilfer. And he has proven that he can play in this league, but he had very little to do with those wins. Five of the games were against some of the worst teams in the league at the end of the season, and then the other five the defense and special teams won the games. Case in point while losing to the Jets 20-0 Jermaine Lewis returned two punts for touchdowns, Chris McAllister return one interception for a touchdown, and Duane Starks returned another interception, which set up a field goal. Look at Dilfer's numbers, and tell me why you think he has done more than I suggest. If this game on Sunday comes done to a two-minute drill by Dilfer, you will see the Dilfer that Tampa got rid of. If this isn't enough, go back to the Tennessee game in the playoffs when the score was tied 10-10 and Dilfer was bailed out once again. Anthony Mitchell returned a block field goal for a touchdown, and Ray Lewis returned an interception for a touchdown. Still not convinced? In the Oakland game the defense caused five turnovers and knocked Rich Gannon out of the game and Dilfer still only created 16 points.
From Greg: Don't the Ravens need to trash talk? After all, the media has done nothing but belittle them all year long. They need to talk to boost their confidence because they sure won't be reading in the papers about how good they are to boost their confidence.
Pat Kirwan: Talk is no way to boost your confidence, and media talk shouldn't shatter your confidence either. It all comes down to playing the game on Sunday, and the Ravens will play tremendous football.
From BrownsFan: I know the Super Bowl is going on this week, but I am looking to the draft. What do you think the Browns will do with the third pick?
Pat Kirwan: This answer clearly will depend on who the head coach is. If it is an offensive guy, I could see him taken an offensive player. That being said it would be great if they could get David Terrell or a big tackle like Leonard Davis. If they decide they want a running back they could move down in the draft and still get the player they want.
From OilGriese: Where do you feel Drew Brees will get drafted? Do you feel he is NFL material?
Pat Kirwan: Yes, I do think Brees is NFL material, and there are a number of teams that need a quarterback. He could be a candidate in Seattle, Atlanta or Pittsburgh. And if Jacksonville could not renegotiate with Mark Brunell he could be a candidate there.
CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have today with Pat Kirwan. Thanks for joining us and we'll see you again tomorrow.
Pat Kirwan: See you tomorrow for my last chat.
