Reactions

Warriors fans remember the heartbreakers

CNNSI.com looked at a few of the transactions that made Warriors fans shout, "Say It Ain't So." Then we opened the mailbag and let users vent on those and other dirty deals from over the years.

Here is a sampling of your reactions:

  Chris Webber
An out-clause in his contract let Chris Webber leave Golden State after one season. Tim DeFrisco/Allsport

In your story of the hapless Warriors, how could you possibly forget to include Chris Webber and the several trades the resulted during the saga:

  • Webber for Penny Hardway and three first-round draft picks on draft day

  • Webber for Gugliotta (and the three first-round draft picks back ... or were they? The three Golden State got in return were not as good as the three it gave up).

  • Gugliotta for Donyell Marshall.

  • And finally Marshall for Danny Fortson in a four-team trade.

This is truly a star crossed franchise when it comes to trades.
    Joe Chouinard, San Mateo, Calif.

As a partner in season tickets for the Warriors going on 10 years, it has been a continual heartbreak. I think this shall be the last year of the cash outpour. I can not even give the tickets (2nd row, foul line) away now, even with the parking pass. Unless of course one of the big stars from another team is in town. As a ticket holder for baseball, football and basketball, the Warriors are a true embarrassment. Even the Clippers look forward to coming into this town!
    Fred Holzeiser, Oakland, Calif.

You forgot the third worst Warrior trade of their history! In 1994, they traded the No. 3 pick (Anfernee Hardaway) and three first-round choices in '96, '98, and '00 for the No. 1 pick, Chris Webber . Webber was traded one season later for Tom Gugliotta, who stayed a few months, and then was dealt for Donyell Marshall. Marshall was a dog with the Warriors, his good play with the Jazz notwithstanding. The best thing you can say about this deal for the Warriors is that it is over, there are no more repercussions to be felt.

I want to add another thing: The tragedy of this deal, as with all these deals, is that it is really only the fans who suffer the long-term effects of having no draft picks. Don Nelson, the idiot of this deal, and the reason Webber wanted out is now with the Mavs, where he doesn't suffer for messing up the Warriors for six years! My love for the Warriors is matched only by my hatred of the Mavericks, and whenever this bad luck of ours is over, I look forward to our rise and their demise.
    Justin P. Jacobson, Eugene, Ore.

      Mitch Richmond
Mitch Richmond averaged nearly 23 points per game in his three seasons in Golden State. Tim DeFrisco/Allsport
It amazes me that, of all the bad Warriors moves you chronicled, the worst of the bunch was omitted: the trade that broke up Run T-M-C ( Mitch Richmond to Sacramento for Billy Owens , perhaps the most overrated forward ever to come out of Division I college hoops). The Warriors were an exciting team with personality. What they got in the trade was a "point-forward" who had no ball-handling skills, no go-to offensive moves, no outside shot, no post-position offense, and no slashing ability. People can say what they want about the Webber fiasco; this was the trade that provided the foundation for the slippery slope downward this organization is on.
    Mike, Oakland, Calif.

Perhaps equal to the Chamberlain and Carroll fiascoes was the drafting of Todd Fuller over Kobe Bryant .
    Richard Stubblefield, Watsonville, Calif.

You didn't include the Warriors' 1998 draft-day trade of Vince Carter for his former Carolina teammate Antawn Jamison . Though Jamison is beginning to perform, Carter awed people from the beginning, and is one of the premier players in the NBA already.
    Tom, Syracuse, N.Y.

The one that broke my heart was the Webber-Nellie feud. I had followed Webber since his appearance in the McDonald's high school all-star game and dreamt about him being the mobile big man Nellie had been searching for to complement the Run TMC trio of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin. By the time Webber entered the draft, Richmond had been traded for Billy Owens, but that seemed okay since they had a budding talent in Sprewell manning the 2 and Owens seemed to be a good running mate for Webber.

When Orlando took Webber with the 1st pick, I was petrified that Nellie would blow the pick on Shawn Bradley, but Philly luckily swooped in and took that option off the table. When Golden State drafted Penny Hardaway and traded for Webber, I was sure I had died and gone to basketball heaven.

Of course, both Hardaway and Mullin went down with injuries in Webber's rookie year, but the flashes of brilliance he showed while playing with Sprewell and Avery Johnson (remember that dunk he threw down on Sir Charles?) just whet my appetite.

Alas, the basketball gods giveth and they taketh away. Webber turned into Gugliotta, Gugliotta turned into Marshall, and we hit rock bottom with Spree losing his mind and choking Carlesimo. To this day, I've yet to see a team that looked so promising break down into oblivion as quickly.

I think we Warrior fans have suffered enough. When will this dark cloud over the franchise lift?
    Nick Suh, Hayward, Calif.

Golden State has a long history of making me cry from the Sleepy Floyd and Joe "Barely Cares" Carroll for Ralph Sampson who we traded to Sacramento for Jim Peterson; then Tim Hardaway and Chris Gatling for Kevin Willis and Bimbo Coles. Or was it the trade of Tyrone Hill to make cap room for Chris Webber, who we traded for Tom Gugliatta who we traded for the super Donyell Marshal or was it when we traded the a draft pick 15 overall to Seattle for Alton Lister who was out all that year and the pick turned out to be Shawn Kemp.
    Geoff Jonas, U.S. Army, Germany

Almost every transaction the Warriors have ever made.

Joe Barry for Parrish & McHale
    Webber for Gugliotta
    Gugliotta for Marshall
Hardaway for Bimbo Coles & Kevin Willis
Sprewell for Starks, Cummings and Mills
    Gatling for nothing
    Richmond for Owens

Then we get to our draft choices

Joe Smith instead of Kevin Garnett
Todd Fuller instead of Kobe Bryant

I'm getting sick just reliving this stuff.
    David Rosenberg, San Francisco

Every trade the Golden State Warriors have ever made exemplify everything stupid that you can do with transactions to kill a franchise.
    Bob Sachs, New York, N.Y.
